SCOHRA ON GOOD DEEDS DAY 2018

Good Deeds Day (GDD) is an annual tradition of good deeds. Hundreds of thousands of people all over the world choose to help others through different acts of kindness and selflessness without expecting any reward. They put simple ideas into practice and prove that everyone in the society can do good. However small, these gestures can go a long way to improve other people’s lives and foster positive change in the world.

Initiated in 2007 by Shari Arison, a businesswoman and philanthropist, Good Deeds Day is held annually and has become the leading day of celebrating good deeds and with the aim of continuing to encourage people to do good in their communities. This year’s Good Deeds Day, held on Sunday15th April, was organized by Volunteer Involving Organizations Society (VIO-Society), and set along City Hall Way, in Nairobi’s Central Business District. The event was the second annual GDD celebrations in the country, and was attended by children, students, youths, volunteers, Community Based Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations, Multilateral organizations, The Nairobi County Government, and other members of the public.

Nairobi County Governor Hon. Mike Sonko flagged the celebrations, after which he expressed his passion for doing good and unending efforts to give back to the community. Numerous organizations and companies set up their exhibitions in booths where they shared the good deed projects and initiatives they run in various parts of the country.

SCOHRA was not left out either. There was a booth set aside for exhibitions and for engaging members of the public who walked past or expressed interest in SCOHRA. Human rights activists led by SCOHRA Director Awuor Ayiecho and the youth leader Wathagi Ndung’u offered free legal aid to the public as an act of doing good. They also shared the National Volunteerism Policy which provides guidelines on management of volunteerism in Kenya.

The key strategic interventions in the National Volunteerism Policy are to:

  1. Develop an Act of Parliament on volunteerism
  2. Establish the National Volunteer Secretariat and Board
  • Conduct surveys and research on volunteerism
  1. Support Volunteer Involving Organizations (VIOs)
  2. Develop volunteerism curriculum to inculcate volunteer values
  3. Mainstream volunteerism within MDAs, country Governments and private sectors
  • Develop and implement programs for volunteer programs for Kenyan professionals
  • Lobby organizations to recognize volunteerism
  1. Observe every year the National Volunteer week and the International Volunteer Day (5th December)

SCOHRA remains committed to doing good through its programs as it aims to empower the community using human rights education, impact positively towards personal and societal development, and promote positive change in the society.

The next Good Deeds Day will take place on 7th April 2019.

2017 Theme: Critical Minds for Critical Times: Media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies

World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference. Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day.

It is an opportunity to:

  • celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom;
  • assess the state of press freedom throughout the world;
  • defend the media from attacks on their independence;
  • and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Amnesty International Strategy 2017-20

Hey SCOHRA,

For the past one year, we have been engaged in an International Youth Strategy Review process for Amnesty International as an external organization + youth partner for Amnesty International Kenya. We were aligning the 2010 – 2015 strategy to the new goals set for the movement but more importantly we wanted the new strategy to reflect concerns and experiences for youth both in the movement and outside the movement e.g. Stronger partner engagement with youth organizations … Last year around this time we held consultations with youth leaders, Amnesty decision makers, external organizations & Amnesty staff … Here in Kenya, SCOHRA activists contributed immensely.

Thank you Joseph, Willis, Awuor, Nzangi, Adero, Stella, Lodenyi and Nick 👏 Presenting Amnesty’s new international youth strategy 2017 – 2020 #YouthPowerAction. It’s the brochure version for a quick read 👆 We hope it inspires you to take action wherever you are. In case you have questions I am more than happy to assist. Please share widely with youth activists and youth organizations.

Yours Truly,

Sandra Mwarania
